Propolis is a natural resin, elaborated by bees from substances picked up from
specific parts of vegetables, like: flowers, trees and bee barks, besides bee wax
and pollen. It is the greatest defense of the beehive, taking part as a waterproofing
substance and also preventing diseases to come into and to spread inside, due
to the anti-bacterial action of some substances in its composition.
Through many years several scientists had been conducting many researches, isolating some compounds of Propolis, which present: antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-oxidant and immune potentiating properties (aid in strengthening the immune system), as well as their possible benefits to humans.
In its book titled:”O Efeito Terapêutico da Própolis” (“The Therapeutical Effect of Propolis”), Japanese researcher Dr.Tetsuya Matsuno points out the main substances responsible for these properties. Amoung them are: (1) Flavonoids (including Quercetin); (2) Cafeic-Phenetylesther Acids; (3) Chlerodan Diterpens; and (4) Artepilin-C (found in “Green Propolis”). This reputation has made Propolis, in popular cultures, acquired the title of “Natural antibiotic”.
While in Brazil, Propolis products are classified only as common food, without therapeutic properties. In countries like the United States and Korea, this product is classified as “DIETARY SUPPLEMENT” and “FOOD WITH ANTI-OXIDANT EFFECT”, respectively, thus demonstrating the relevance of this product in the culture of these countries.
